On Monday 14th September, Olton hosted the TP Tour. A development tour for aspiring tournament professional golfers. The weather was perfect and the course beautifully presented by Mark and his team. We had three players representing Olton in the field of fifty seven. Liam Phipps, assistant professional Rob Killarney and making his first appearance as a professional Joe Macilwraith. Liam like many others in the field had problems on the greens which at 8.00 in the morning were running at 12.5 on the stimp meter this reading surely increased as the heat dried them out further as the day went on. He had to settle for a 75. Rob after a good run of form was feeling confident but at two over par at the turn tried to push too hard to recover the dropped shots and pulled his tee shot out of bounds at the tenth. Pars around to the 16th were followed by a birdie at seventeen. An unlucky bogey at the last meant a four over par 74. Joe was in the first group out at 8.30 and admitted to being nervous. This was obvious as he bogeyed the first and second a further bogey at nine meant he was out in three over par, the chance of making a cheque in his first event looked doubtful. A solid par at ten was then followed by four birdies in succession. Unfortunately, no others, despite good chances at the last four holes were taken. The result a one under par 69 and an eventual tie for ninth. £175 prize money will not be the largest cheque he will receive but it is one he will certainly remember. Olton Bowl winner Sam Broadhurst also making his debut as a pro tied for second on three under par one shot behind Newport’s Jack Davidson who fired an excellent 66.
