Ladies Championship 2021
Wednesday 9th June 2021, saw the ladies of Olton Golf Club competing in the Club Championship, the Ladies Section’s premier trophy event.
The 36 hole stroke-play competition provides the most challenging test of golf, not only in terms of playing ability and concentration but fitness and stamina. 17 ladies participated in the event and all are to be congratulated on their performances on a hot, sunny day. As ever, the course presented a stern test for the competitors with challenging and interesting pin positions picking up the tricky nuances of fast-paced greens, prepared fairways and rough.
The results and trophy presentations at the end of the event were supported by the members of the Ladies Section who came to congratulate the winners with a lovely, social gathering taking place on the patio area, celebrating the day’s event. Lady Captain Debbie Forbes had the honour of presenting the trophies supported by Ann Barnes, Ladies Competition Secretary.
Lady Champion 2021, was Christina Kennedy with a winning score of 185 strokes (R1 99, R2 86). In her acceptance speech, Christina who is no stranger to lifting the trophy, having won it in previous years said “I am just really chuffed to win this”. Runner-Up was Aoife Cannon competing in her first Ladies Championship with a score of 188 strokes (R1 93, R2 95), a tremendous result for her and wonderful to see the youth of ladies golf doing so well. Winner of the Best Nett was Lucy Rigg, who has this year re-joined us after a break from golf due to family commitments. Lucy has won the Best Nett Trophy previously and it was lovely to see her reunited with it again after winning it 20 years ago.
Very many congratulations to all the trophy winners and to everyone who competed in the event.

Olton Seniors vs Leamington & County Tuesday June 1st 2021
After the disappointment of last week’s false start at swampy Ladbroke Park, the 2021 season started with a home match against Leamington & County. Ably skippered by Bob Ellis, the result was a welcome win 3 ½ to 2 ½. Well done lads. The skipper and David Burke opened the OGC account with a 4&3 victory and were well supported by Richard Blasdale and Steve Fowler (3&2), Graham Hoskin and Terry Smith (5&4) while Richard Lea and Ken Davies weighed in with the crucial half point.
On a super sunny day, a splendid time was had by all and especially by one of the Leamington team who spotted a rare Mistle Thrush down the 14th hole. His first sighting of such a bird for a couple of years apparently. Chris Packham, eat your heart out.
