Lady President's charity raises £6250!

Lady President Jess Danter with Liz Cottier and Sarah Wakeman from the Marie Curie Hospice

Outgoing Lady President Jess Danter was delighted when she presented the cheque at the Ladies AGM last week.

And so too were the recipients, Liz Cottier and Sarah Wakeman, on behalf of the Marie Curie Hospice. We were given a brief insight into the progress made so far with the 'new build' in Marsh Lane and the enthusiasm and passion shown by our visitors was plain to see.

£6250 is a really significant amount and a huge effort was made throughout the year. Thank you to all Ladies and Gentlemen who at some point contributed to this very worthwhile cause.

Lady Captain, Lynda Cooper, has named the Marie Curie Hospice as her chosen charity for 2012 so efforts will continue on their behalf.

2011 WLCGA Team Championships 06.09.11

23 clubs entered this years competition and battled not only with the testing course at Harborne GC but also the weather. It was a gruelling day for all participants as high winds and horizontal rain made scoring well extremely difficult. Our 5 team members, Bev Belcher, Jane Frith, Lynda Copper, Del Lakin-Hall and Ruth Hall, were all exhausted by the end of the day especially as the format was a medal round with all five scores to count. In the circumstances Olton came a very respectable 9th in the net competition with a total of 417 which saw Atherstone GC winners on 402. Bev had the 5th best net score of the day - 75. Copt Heath were victorious in the gross category on 436 and Olton 13th with a total of 491. Better luck next year as they say! A full listing of results can be found on www.warksgolf.co.uk/ladies.

Centenary Salver 2011

Simon Harwin & Bev Belcher are this year's winners of the Centenary Salver.

A mixed greensomes format for the day was closely contested and resulted in a top score of 36points.

David Proud and Jane Barker came 2nd with 35points, on count back from Scott Kennedy and Del Lakin-Hall in 3rd place.

It was lovely day, enjoyed by all and well organised by our Captains Geoff Chaplin and Lynda Cooper.

Thanks to all involved.

Olton narrowly defeated in League semi-final

Olton Ladies WLCGA League team missed out on a place in the 2011 final by the narrowest of margins. The match was played in the very best of spirits but the final tally of 4-3 in favour of Maxstoke Park left the Olton ladies somewhat disappointed. One match was lost on the 18th green, another on the 19th hole. So close but yet so far. Everyone gave their best and wins were recorded by Del Lakin-Hall, Mary O'Neil and Ruth Hall. We will endeavour to go that one step further next year!

Olton to play Maxstoke Park in WLCGA League semi-final

Monday 8th August is a date firmly in the diary for our Ladies League team. They are to play against Maxstoke Park on the neutral turf of Stratford upon Avon GC. The seven strong team will endeavour to secure a place in the final for the second time in three years. The other semi will be contested by Leamington & Co and The Warwickshire at Shirley GC. Fingers crossed for a fine day, plenty of good golf and a successful outcome.

Olton Ladies League team jubilant with 5th Win!

Our WLCGA League team scored their 5th win to secure an unbeaten record in their division. The 4 - 3 win, away at Nuneaton, assures the club a place in this years semi-finals. The date, 8th August, will now be a high priority for all Ladies who have played in the team this year and our Lady Captain will have some tough decisions to make with regard to team selection. It could be almost a month before we know who our opposition will be and the venue either Shirley GC or Stratford upon Avon. Watch this space!

4th win for Olton Ladies in Warwickshire League

Captain Lynda was absolutely delighted by her team's performance on Monday 6th June. A resounding 6 - 1 win, at home, against Stonebridge GC leaves the them firmly at the top of their division. A further win in the final match next week against Nuneaton would secure the team's place in the semi-final stage of this year's competition. If not, a patient wait will be required for the eventual outcome!

Gentlemen win Collinge Putter

  • Lady Captain presents Collinge Putter to Captain, Geoff Chaplin.

Lady Captain presents Collinge Putter to Captain, Geoff Chaplin.

There were winners, there were losers, but in overall terms the Gentlemen won the day.

12 pairs contested this years annual Ladies v Gentlemen competition, a 4 ball betterball format.

A number of matches went all the way to the 18th and the final winning tally was a close, hard fought 7 - 5.

It was an enjoyable day, albeit a little chilly to finish, but the players were soon warmed by the lovely meal and atmosphere in the club house afterwards.

Our thanks to Mr. Captain, Geoff, and Lady Captain, Lynda, for their efforts in organising the day.

The Ladies will be keen to restore the balance next year!

Lady Captain's Away Day - 1st June

The sun shone, smiles radiated, a great day was had by all.

Our Lady Captain, Lynda, spared no effort in organising her 2011 'Away day'. 44 ladies joined her at South Staffordshire GC to enjoy a wonderful and most enjoyable day. The coach was buzzing with anticipation as we were each given a little bag of momentos and our expectations for the day were exceeded. The golf, for some, was much better than others, with Dorothy Lucas winning the silver division competition and Val Duncombe the bronze. There were plenty of prizes up for grabs as well as spot prizes thanks to the generosity of Lynda. Click here for full results.

The Golf club looked after us well, attended to all our needs. One wonders how may bottles of Pimms they got through!

As ever at Olton GC, the atmosphere was fantastic and extremely convivial, huge testament to our Lady Captain.

Lynda, a huge 'thank you' from all of us, for such a lovely day.

Olton Ladies score valuable league win against Shirley GC

In very blustery conditions and away  from home Olton came in with a very valuable win against ShirleyGC.

The 4-3  scoreline gave our Lady Captain, Lynda,  3 wins out of 3 so far in this years competition. Shirley were not only the 2010 WLCGA overall League winners but they also won Nett trophy in the 2010 WLCGA Team Championships. They were a force to be reckoned with and the team were over the moon with todays result. The final 2 matches against Stonebridge, at home, and Nuneaton, away, will determine whether Olton can make it through to this year's semi-finals. Well done Ladies.

At home our 'B' team secured a comprehensive win 6-1 against Gay Hill. Congratulations to Ruth Hall and her team.

Ladies 3 ball Alliance Results 2011

  • 3 Ball Alliance winners
Jean Baxter and Ray Davies

3 Ball Alliance winners Jean Baxter and Ray Davies

A dry  windy day saw teams from all over the County contest this annual 3 ball alliance. The course was in good condition but the pin positions together with 3/4 handicap made scoring difficult. It was perhaps not surprising that a predominantly Olton team came away with the top prize. Jan Innes, Ray Davies and Jean Baxter from Robin Hood posted the 147 winning score. Teams from Shirley came 2nd , Walsall 3rd and The Warwickshire 4th. The only '2' of the day was by Lesley Fisher from Shirley GC. Del Lakin-Hall and her team took the front 9 prize and a mixed team from The Warwickshire, Nuneaton and Stoneleigh Deer Park  won the back 9 on countback. Click here for full results.

Thanks to Liz Jarvie and Dorothy Lucas for their organisation together with the numerous helpers throughout the day.

OGC Family 4'somes Competition 2011

  • Mr & Mrs F Lambert - Winners OGC Family 4'somes Trophy 2011

    Mr & Mrs F Lambert - Winners OGC Family 4'somes Trophy 2011

Congratulations to Frank and Margaret Lambert. They are the 2011 winners of the OGC Family Foursomes Trophy. The competition, always played on the May Day bank holiday Monday,  saw 19 pairs enter with a further 7 pairs playing in the alternative 'Orphans ' competition. The Foursome format is a bit like Marmite - you either love it or hate it - but it can certainly test a family relationship!!!

Harmony was obviously the name of the game for Frank and Margaret who came in with a net score of 73, 2 shots ahead of John and Liz Jarvie in second place.

Captains Geoff Chaplin and Lynda Cooper came up with the idea of an alternative 'Orphans' competitions to allow others to join in on the day. They renagued on taking the title having scored a net 70 but awarded it to Margaret Huyton and her partner on the day Martin Butlin with a score of 73.

In true Olton style the majority of participants stayed to enjoy  the apres golf meal and it's accompanying convivial atmosphere.

Mail on Sunday 2011

Anne Turner, Diane Corless and Sarah Read won their matches 3&2, 2&1 and 1up respectivley. Mary O'Neil lost on the 18th and Del Lakin-Hall was beaten by a real powerhouse 5&4. The winning margin of 3 - 2 was sufficient to see Olton progress to the next stage.

Well played Ladies.

End of the Christmas Festivities

The last of the Ladies Christmas festivities, a 'Sparkle Night', was held at the club on Wednesday 12th January. Prior to this we had enjoyed a Carols Night, the Ladies Christmas Luncheon (which followed the 'stick 'n' tinsel competition) and the Chic Trot 'n' meal. All events were very well supported and enjoyed by everyone taking part. Thanks to the many organisors and helpers. The 2011 golf season can now get under away and hopefully warmer weather will not be too far on the horizon.
