Junior Presentation Night 2011

Over 70 people attended the Junior Presentation Night on the 14th November. Many thanks to the President "Terry Smith", Club Captain "Geoff Chaplin", Lady Captain "Lynda Cooper", Club Professional "Charles Haynes", Barbara Malins and John Lattey for their attendance. The presentation marked a highly successful evening for the Olton Juniors, who won the Central Warickshire Junior Golf League and were runners up in the Royal British Legion Junior Knockout. Erika Dean stood down in Captain handing over the Junior Captaincy to Ben Westley. Ben Wiggins will be the junior vice-captain supporting Ben this year. Good luck to both Bens this year.

Well done to all the Juniors for their Fantastic effort and performances this year. Good luck for the 2012 Season.

Rob Tovey Wins the Warwickshire JOM

Rob Tovey breaks all the records to win the Warwikshire Junior Order of Merit

Saturday 15th October - The West Midlands Golf and County Club - the 2011 Junior Order of Merit Championship - From unknown to record setter, Olton's Rob Tovey became an example for any Warwickshire Junior that never having been noticed by the County is no barrier to becoming the Junior Order of Merit Champion.

The records set by Rob Tovey were for the overall points (12 655) and notably point from Junior Opens (8205) the latter breaking the record of Rob Browning by more that 2 500 points (a record also broken by Rob Owens and Rob Copperthwaite.

Junior Team at St. Pierre

8th October - Semi Final Royal British Legion Junior Knockout v Huyton and Prescott - St. Pierre.

Olton juniors reached the final of the RBL Junior knockout on the Old Course at St. Pierre. Rob Tovey and Erika Dean led off the match and after being 2 down at one stage managing to half their match.  In the 2nd game, Liam Phipps and Jack Dean never went behind taking an early lead  going 2 up after 3 holes. The Huyton team managed to peg them back going all square on the 8th. Liam then produced a birdie on the 9th and then continued to put the pressure on winning their match 5 up. Olton through to the finals winning the tie 5 up

9th October - Final Royal British Legion Junior Knockout v Colchester - St. Pierre.

Olton Juniors finally met their match in the Competition playing in strong winds, against a strong Colchester side whose team included a team with handicaps of 1, 2, 4 & 5. In the first match Rob Tovey and Erika Dean won the first hole, but from the third hole were always behind, managing to stay within two holes. On the back nine the Colchester Team had an eagle and two birdies,which put them 5 up ) the eventual match score). In the second match Liam Phipps and Jack Dean went two up after two holes, and continued to lead until the 13th when the Colchester Team pulled one back with a birdie on the 13th, quickly followed by an eagle on the 14th. The match remained all square until the 18th when Colchester won the last and the match 1 up

Well done to the Junior team, a great achievement to become runners up in this national knockout competition. Special thanks to Paul Tovey who also helped on the practice day. Many thanks to all the supporters who supported the team at the event including Terry Smith, Ian Phipps, Geoff Chaplin, Bruce Wilson, Ian and Cathy McMaster, Anita Tovey and Gemma .Thanks also to Mike Bowen for raising money for the Royal British Legion and all the Olton Members who contributed.

Liam Phipps through to the National Skills Final

Both Liam Phipps and Rob Tovey competed in the regional final of the national skills challenge at The Warwickshire on the 11th August. The juniors tested their skills on the short game practice area, range and par 3 course with the top boys and girls from each of the four age groups having now qualified for the Skills Challenge National Final on Saturday 10th September. Liam managed to win the his age category (15 - 17) and will now go onto Woodall Spa on the 10th September to compete in the national final.

Junior Team reach semi finals of the Royal British Legion Junior Knockout

Olton Juniors defeat Low Laithes Juniors in the 1/4 finals

Olton Juniors reached the Semi Finals of the Royal British Legion Junior Knockout with a fine performance winning both games 4 up, overall winning score of 8 up. Rob Tovey partnered by Erika Dean had 7 birdies between them on the back nine - Rob scored a gross 67 in the match. In the other other game it was a hard fought game level on the 12th Tee until Liam Phipps had a birdie on the 12th to put Liam and Jack Dean 1 up. They continued to put on the pressure on their opposition and finished the match 4 up. Well done to the junior team who now play in the Semi Finals / Finals at St.Pierre on the 8th and 9th October.

Juniors play well in the Grafton Morrish

Olton Juniors were asked to provide a team to play alongside Denstone School  (as a marking team) in the Midland Qualify of the Grafton Morrish Trophy (Grafton Morrish Public School Old Boys' Golf Association) .

The Junior team consisting of Tom Flynn / Liam Phipps (30pts); Rob Tovey / Ben Silver (28pts) and Matt Plenty / George Taylor (21pts) came in with a combined score of 79pts. The format was Stableford Scratch Foursomes. Olton Juniors scored the highest score on the day. Well done to all the Juniors, a fantastic effort. Tom and Liam also had the highest individual score on the day.

Junior Coaching

JUNIOR COACHING - 2011

Junior Members

The Junior Coaching Academy starts on Monday 9th May for Olton Golf Club Junior Members. This is between 18:30 and 20:00. All Junior members are invited to attend. The concentration this year will be on the Short Game. These sessions will include the Junior Short Game ChallengeTrophy competition. 

There is a rules and etiquette night on the 16th May in the Heaton Lounge at 18:30 for Junior Members.

Junior Non-Members

There will also be a session for Non-Members on Thursday 12th May 18:30 – 19:30. These sessions will continue until the end of July. There will be a small charge for these sessions.

We had 12 junior members of OGC in a field of 54. Luke Allen, Martin Wingrove and Niyamal Islam Ali were in  the top 8 best net scores

Junior Monday Medals

During the summer months we will be running medals on Monday evenings for juniors to get their handicaps reduced. There will not be a start sheet, entry fee nor prizes. You must register in the pro's shop and put your card into the competition box. If the competiton has been set up on the computer, enter your scores as usual. CSS for the comp will be calculated and handicaps can go up as well as down.

Win for the Junior under 14 's team

The under 14's team played their first match of the year against Robin Hood. Lead by the under 14's captain George Taylor they won 2.5 to 1.5.

Central Warwickshire Junior League Matches

The first match of the season is against Copt Heath at Copt Heath. We are in the fortunate position of having a lot of competition for team places this year. We will pick the team for the 1st match based on performances in the Wiseman Cup, Old Silhillians's Salver and the Olton Junior Cup. The team will be selected immediately after the Olton Junior Cup competition.

The Whitsun Trophy was won by Jamie Taylor with a net score of 69 in a card playoff fromJoel palser who recorded the best Gross score of 80 net 69 . The best Division 2 score was from Dhiren Patel with gross 100 net 69 .

The President's junior trophy competition was held sunday14th April. Out of 22 competitors 17 scored within the buffer zone. The presidents Trophy was won by Jack Dean with a score of 64 net. Mike Pell recorded the best gross score of 70 net 65. Jake Burgess won the div 2 prize with net 66 and 9 year old James Bowen was best of the wee wonders with net 62. 11 players improved their handicaps.

Niyamal Ali won the Harborne Junior Open with a gross 96 42 points. Jamie Taylor was 3rd with 39 points and also won the longest drive competition.

Olton Juniors do well at Ladbrook Park

Seven Olton Juniors played in the Ladbrook Park Open on Sunday 17th May. Mike Pell had the 2nd best gross and net scores with 74 net 69. Joel Palser, Martin Wingrove and Ben Westley came home with the best team prize with net scores or 71,72,72 respectively.
